I use it becasue it (an OEM version) cost as much as 98 would have
cost me. I'd only recommend 98 either for specific software that will
not work on XP or 2K, or hardware no to XP/2K specs.

FWIW, I have no expierience with 2K, so I could have the wrong
assumptions as to it's capabilites and requirements.

Win2K SP4 is solid as a Rock and easier on resources than XP without
the memory leak of 9x. Someone told me that Microsoft can't sell it
anymore because of the ongoing issue with Sun Microsystems that retired
Win98.
 
Windows 2000 pro is the best you can get, its fast and reliable.
Its quite surprising though that it is more expensive than XP Pro
