If you did an upgrade, your data files in the previous My
Documents folder are still there, but XP has created a new
user and a folder for you. XP security protects user files,
you must take ownership of your old files/folders.

Hi Paolo,

Did you make a backup of your documents before upgrading? This is an often
skipped, extremely important step in performing any operating system
upgrade.

Unfortunately, I've seen this more than a few times when the same name was
used as a new account after the upgrade - all the userprofile-specific
folders pertaining to that username from the old system are overwritten. In
the case of an upgrade from Win2000, which is irreversible, the loss is
permanent. From 9x upgrades, sometimes an uninstall recovers them.

If the same username was not used, then the files should be found under
C:\Documents and Settings\<old_user_name>\My Documents, you would merely
need to take ownership of them to recover.

The post by Jim Macklin refers you to the KB article which tells how to do
this.
