I type notes on the general tab of each of my contacts and want t.

to search the general notes section for a name. I don't have the name with
in the fields of the contact.
 
You are not providing much detail about your problem. OL 2000 will search a
contact and you can enter a checkmark for Search all Text in Contact. This
will turn up any name or word that is in a field or in the window at the
bottom of the basic contact view. However, if you go to Advanced search you
may actually have more trouble finding such a name or word. OL 2002 will do
it, too, but without the checkmark business.
