I installed a new web browser and I tried to delete IEXPLORE.EXE to prevent
it from loading. An interesting thing happens. If you delete the file, it
restores itself a few seconds later. I wish other files would do that
sometimes <g>, but in this case I want to temporarily remove IEXPLORE.EXE to
work with the new browser. I have already made the new browser my default,
but some operations will continue to open MS IE.

I don't want to uninstall IE quite yet as I am still test driving the new
browser.

I also tried renaming IEXPLORE.EXE, but it just reappeared again a few
seconds later. Interesting thing to watch :-)

So. Can I temporarily prevent IE from opening at all?

Thanks.
Mark :-)

Make the new browser your default browser. (you didn't say which one so I
can't tell you how check help or Web) When/if you get done playing with it
change Internet Explorer back to your default.

Click Tools> Internet Options> Programs. Tick the "Internet Explorer Should
Check...." box. Next time you open it you'll be asked if you want to return
it (IE) to default.

On top of what the others said let me add that you don't want to disable
internet explorer as Windows needs it to perform Updates. They won't work
(to my knowledge anyway) with other browsers.

Thank you all. I'm working on it. The last warning was indeed helpful to
remember regarding updates as I do them often.

Thanks again!

If you are using Windows XP (as I presume, from your posting in this
group), then you *CAN'T* uninstal Internet Explorer anyway, AFAIK.

Well if you waned to spend hours scouring over the registry and removing all
signs of IE from there I imagine you technically *could* remove it but it
would be a complete waste of time.

Well, how do I prevent it from popping up all the time? As long as I am connected to the internet, IExpore initiates a new instance of itself frequently, and after an hour or so, I have ten or more new IE windows open. I "uninstalled" it from the control panel program, but, as you said that doesn't make any difference. Actually, deleting the new .exe.files seems to make the situation worse. It's slowing my computer down to a crawl!! (My default browser is Netscape.)

IEXPLORER is windows, you can't delete it, you can as you
have done use a different default browser. You can use
add/remove programs to select Windows Components to
de-select and make another program your browser. You can
only connect and do auto-Windows updates using IE.

But you still need to keep all the Windows Updates and
security because of the hacker, Trojan and virus problems.
My guess is that you've been hijacked and it is opening
multiple windows as it tries to connect to the home of the
porn site or casino or whatever.

Get SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org
and update your anti-virus and install a two-way firewall
such as Zone Alarm from www.zonelabs.com
