I thought my AMD 64 X2 was 64bit?

That's the processor I have, but I can't seem to get windows 64bit
installed.
When I try and load the install cd from boot, the cd rom starts to
spin and work, then it just quits and boots into windows like normal.

Maybe it's the CD itself and I messed up during burning?
Or is there something else I need to know about 64bit that I'm
missing?

Thanks in advance guys.

P.S. I'm installing 64bit because I just ordered 8GB of DDR2 ram. So
without 64bit windows, I won't be able to use all my ram.

Do you have boot from CD in your BIOS and have the CD drive as the first
device in your BIOS boot order list? You probably also need to press a key
once the system starting booting from CD to confirm you want to boot from
CD.

All moderen processors are 64bit, so its nothing to do with that.

Actualy I can't get that installed either. I can only run it from
disc. It always errors during install.

Maybe it is something other than the processor, that is causing the
problem.

With the Ubuntu LiveCD booted, try "dmesg" in a terminal window. Look
for evidence the system is running in a 64 bit mode. At least that
will put your mind at ease.

I would run individual diagnostics, like memtest86+ (memtest.org) and
also the diagnostic for the hard drive (from your hard drive manufacturer).
See if the component parts of your system are healthy.

Being able to boot a Ubuntu CD, means a lot of your system is working
OK. Have a look in "dmesg" and see if there are any complaints or
errors with any subsystems.

The nice thing about Linux, is it gives an easy way to test hardware.
It has enough rough edges (bad low memory handling), to not be
everyone's cup of tea for a daily OS.

What exactly does "work" mean? Does the system begin
booting from that CD? I suspect not, that there is
something wrong with the CD or drive such that the bios
doesn't see it as a viable boot device and so it then moves
on to booting from the HDD.

You don't need a 64 bit processor to start the Windows 64
installation process, to boot to it from the CD, so whatever
the problem is, that's (64 bit CPU or not) not it, but yes
your processor is 64 bit regardless of this..

Maybe it's the CD itself and I messed up during burning?

That seems the most likely.

I hope you have first ran memtest86+ for several hours (at
least overnight to test that much memory) before trying to
install windows, as otherwise you could end up with file
corruption that is very hard to track down later, making it
seem as if something else is wrong even if the memory errors
themselves were later resolved.

I already have that. Unfortunately you can't run just Linux. I guess
you can, but the headaches and hassle isn't worth trying to.

I believe that the suggestion was "try to install _this_ 64-bit
operating system rather than _that_ 64-bit operating system". If the
system loads and runs 64-bit Ubuntu then it is clearly a 64-bit system
and is working as such and that puts the problem down to the Windows
installation disk/process. You can always eliminate the Ubuntu
installation if you don't want it.

You don't even need to install anything :-)
It's a live CD, so just booting from it tells you if your system
runs 64-bit code.

You are not giving us anything to go on here. Windows XP won't install and
Ubuntu won't install, but what errors? At what point do you get errors? And
so on...
