yesterday, the monitor stopped working (as if no signal was coming from the
geforce 4 4200 ti).

today, i switched on the pc, and could, just about, hear the motherboard
saying something like "you don't have..". i can't hear the rest (it's very
tinny, so is very muffled). i've tried a different monitor, and i still get
the same problem.

i had no problems with the card in my previous pc, so i really don't know
what the problem could be.

i bought the mobo a couple of weeks ago off a newsgroup and was sold "as
new" it had been working fine for a week, and then suddenly this.

please, if anyone can shed some light on this, i would be really
appreciative.

i've taken out the card numerous times, and i still get the same problem.

i can hear everything booting up correctly though (hd powering up etc.).

I learned from experience to use headphones or powered speakers.

how do you do that? i thought i had to use the speaker which came with the
case?

hmm. it seems the bloke who installed my motherboard didn't install it
properly. i refitted the mobo, and the problem has gone.
