I've tried everything to get my WIN XP home and WINXP Pro
computers to see eachother.

XP home was easily networked before to my WINME computer
(while the WIN ME had Norton Internet Securtiy). The XP
home computer STILL HAS ZoneAlarm on it.

XP PRO comp took the place of my WINME computer. It STILL
now has Norton Internet Security on it.

So, I tihnk NORTON is the problem. Under personal
firewall, under the advanced tab, here are some things it
is blocking which I think may be the cause of my problems:
BLOCK Default Inbound NetBIOS Name
BLOCK Default Inbound NetBIOS
BLOCK Windows File Sharing

However, I unchecked windows file sharing, to no avail...
(after a restart of both comps, etc.).

I just don't know what any of this stuff really is, I'm
playing it by ear, and trying to do whatever I can. If
anyone can help me, let me know.

By the way, my subnet masks ARE different - and they won't
turn to be the same (after a "release all" command)...if
that matters??? haha.

THANKS

In order to have your system connection between one
another, they need to be on the same subnet.

For example:

PC#1 192.168.1.10 255.255.255.0
PC#2 192.168.1.11 255.255.255.0

And if you have some type of broadband router, the IP
address of that device will be listed on the local
machines under the Gateway (ie. 192.168.1.1)

Typically, within a small home LAN, its actually quicker
to manually configure your IP settings, instead of relying
on DHCP.

Regards.

How would I go about manually setting my settings though?
I mean, I know how to LITERALLY do it, but I don't know
what are the right numbers to fill in everywhere.

I have Road Runner...So everytime I reset my modem, I get
a new IP address (and we shut the power off to the modem
freaquently)... If I manually give myself one, is it ok?
Will RR function correctly??

I really just don't know what to do, I need some detailed
explanations, I think...haha

THANKS though. Just a little more and I suppose I'll be
there.

you need to enable NETbios over tcp/ip AND have ipx/spx
protocols running on ALL of the computers for any flavor
of windows to see XP otherwise it doesn't happen.

have a good day.

No, there's no need for the IPX/SPX protocol. All versions of Windows
can network with each other using TCP/IP as the only network protocol.

In my experience, using more than one protocol for file and printer
sharing is likely to cause network browsing problems and make the
network unreliable, especially when XP is involved.

If a network doesn't work with just TCP/IP, the most likely problem is
mis-configured firewall programs. In particular, you must disable
XP's built-in Internet Connection firewall on a local area network
connection. I've written a web page with details:

thank you , Steve.

You're welcome, Joe.

For completeness, I should add that there's one unusual network setup
where it's better to use IPX/SPX for file sharing than to use TCP/IP:
when all of the networked computers connect directly to the Internet
through a cable or DSL modem (not through a router or Internet
Connection Sharing) and all of the computers receive public IP
addresses.

In that situation, using TCP/IP for file sharing could let other
Internet users access your shared files. The solution is to install
the IPX/SPX protocol for file sharing and to un-bind sharing from
TCP/IP. I've written a web page with details:

NIS has the option to add trusted computer IP addresses, read the
documentation.
These ports will not be blocked on the local network if you do this.
XP's built in firewall does not have this option so disable it if it's on.
