Thank you for your help. I have spent some time
researching this in the past 24 hours and have found that
on my machine at least this is not backdoor-AZV.gen, and a
search of the symantec site for backdoor-AZV.gen does not
return any results, curious. Anyway, I did after perusing
many usegroups find that the thing that got my machine was
backdoor.hacarmy.d, although my Norton AntiVirus Corporate
Edition with the latest virus definitions did not catch it
(this is also a little strange), the symantec site does
list the symptoms
(
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/ba
ckdoor.hacarmy.d.html), I checked my machine and indeed I
found the file <system>zonelockup.exe and a registry entry
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run with an
added value "Winsock32driver"="ZoneLockup.exe".
This virus attempts to access your machine via port 6667,
fortunately my firewall did not have port 6667 open so the
malicious intruder would not have been able to access my
machine anyway.
I have cleaned my machine and I have learned a lot.
Perhaps the most important thing I have learned is that
being stupid is not a sin but it is a lot of work.
