It has been reported by several people that after an update from
Microsoft, the Network cars/s stop working. A reinstallation to a
former system that was working didn't solve the problem.
So I acquire a modem that connects to the Internet via USB and
everything seems to be OK. Just don't use the NIC ports.

This does not fix the NIC. You have by-passed the problem.

Obviously but apparently no one has found a clear solution for the
problem.
Some have succeed by renaming every instance to "tcpip.sys" to
"tcpip.sys_old" and let the system repair itself after the request to
insert the XP disc.
Others have succeed by loading the driver for the Ethernet Controller
on the mother board.
My system doesn't display any "tcpip.sys" and I don't have a CD for
the mother board.
I have no use for the NICs if I get a new modem with USB and wireless
networking.
