I have no idea how this happened but shortcuts to any of my *.exe links in
my system open up with the command prompt DOS window. Also at startup any of
my startup programs are trying to open in this "DOS" mode and I get an error
on many of them saying that there is "not enough memory to open program" all
in the black background dos window. I have tried all the exe fix programs
the link repair programI found on another microsoft newsgroup and I still
have this very troublesome problemPlease help if you can....reformat and/or
complete restore is not something I want to do at all.

Are your shortcut links actually correct? You can right-
click on a shortcut, and look its "Properties".

Is the "Start In" folder path the same as the "Target"
path (except for the executable filename, of course)? If
there are spaces in the file or path names, do you have
full quotes around the entire string (like "C:\Program
Files\Avarice\Greed.exe")?

Is there a command before the target filename, like 'CMD
C:\Pilots\Airplanes.exe', which would therefore open a
CMD (Command Line) window?

I'm afraid that's all I can think of, that would cause
this. Unless someone else can add a suggestion, the only
other alternative I know of, is, yes, a reinstall.

Note, however, that you can _start_ by uninstalling and
reinstalling one or two programs, and see if they work
any better. Maybe that will give you a clue to what's
going on.

Of course, the other obvious question, is, can you think
of any change you might have recently made to the system
that might have affected this? I know you said, "no
idea", but it's worth giving careful thought to.

Of course, another thought for the future, is to keep
a "system logbook", and record every change you make, no
matter how small. It's surprising how useful that can
be, sometime down the line, when a question, or something
stranger, pops up.
