i'm trying to download package 2 for XP but every time i
try to it says i have a serial code already in use. i
tried to get ahold of someone who works on the site but
that takes money.

i went to a copmuter shop and paid $200 for themto install
XP onto my computer. i dont have the money to go out and
buy it again just so i can get version 2.

i would normally not worry about it but now my copmuter is
bugging out, turning off my itself, freezing, shutting
down programs.

it just started doing this after i tried to download
version 2.

what should i do?

Sandy,

Are you sure the copy of Windows XP your computer shop installed is
legitimate ?
Did they give you the CD and the product key/certificate of authenticity ?
see
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/default.mspx

Just as a for your information - there is no "version 2", there is Service
Pack 2, which is not a paid for product and is a free download either via
Windows Update/Automatic Update or as a single file.

You paid someone $200 just to install Windows?
shoot..............
Wish I could charge that much and get away with it, over here I charge $50.

I think the OP meant that she paid $200 for an OEM copy of XP and
installation.

I suggest that the shop which installed XP for her used a spurious CD
key.

Sandy,

Can you please post the EXACT error message you're getting?

Also, when you say you're trying to install "Version 2," can you tell us
EXACTLY what product you're trying to install?

While there was discussion that Service Pack 2 would not allow itself to be
installed on certain pirated (illegally copied, and yes, it's possible that
the person you paid to install Windows did in fact copy it illegally)
operating systems. However, that was dropped from Service Pack 2, and SP2
should allow itself to be installed on any OS, even pirated ones.

We really need the full, exact error message to help resolve this issue.

Not true, apparently. I was attempting to install SP2 on a customer's
computer and got an error message that the key was invalid. When I checked,
it was in fact the famous pirated key. Maybe it does work on some computers
with bad keys, but in at least that instance, it didn't install.

Hi

Not completely true, I'm afraid. SP2 blocks the same keys that SP1 blocks:

There have been a number of discussions on this newsgroup regarding whether
SP2 will install on non-genuine (aka "pirated") versions of Windows. Here is
the official Microsoft position on this topic:

We expect that nearly all Windows XP users, running genuine or pirated
Windows, will have access to the security technologies in SP2. The same
users that were blocked from installing SP1 - those that have used a small
set of legacy pirated product keys - will be blocked from installing SP2. We
believe that there are very few systems in use today that use these keys --
in other words, the pirates have moved on to other keys which we are not
blocking.

So how do we charaterize our policy?

We want to make sure that the broadest number of people can install SP2.
The nature of malicious attacks on computer users is constantly changing and
we will continue to evaluate how we deal with security updates for pirated
versions of Windows to best protect our genuine Windows customers.

There are actually only an extremely small number of keys that SP2 blocks
directly.
There is a larger set that will not get activated, but if your machine is
running Windows XP (activated) and you attempt to install there are only a
few cases of being a blocked install.

Hi

Yes, but a few is more than none as Matthew wrote, that was my point.
I just wanted to clear up that misunderstanding :-)

Done.
