I have an Epson Stylus C-82 printer. I only use black ink. Unfortunately,
every time I turn the printer on, the head cleaning process uses some of the
colored ink. I'll soon be out of colored ink, and would like very much not
to have to buy some just to keep my printer running.
Epson says it will not run at all when any ink cartridge is empty. Help!!!!

Buy a b/w laser, one that requires only the changing of the
toner cartridge or addition of toner (like a copier). In
the long run, it will be much cheaper. Much, much cheaper.

In a recent PC-Pro review Epson admitted to using underprinting - which is
the use of colour prior to printing with black. Your only answer for black
only is a laser.

You should consider buying a personal b+w laser printer.
In the USA you can get a Samsung ML-1710 for under $100
(after rebate). I have one and I love it. Prints fast
and output looks good. Print will not wash out if it
gets wet. It wont clog and the ink wont dry out if you
dont use it every week. 'Cause there is no ink, just toner.
You can refill the toner 2-4 times before you have to buy
a new toner-drum unit.

There are also other good personal laser printers available.
I own the Samsung 1710 and am happy with it.

If you want to keep your EPson C-82, there is no solution but
to use colored ink, even if you only print in black and white.

If all you EVER do is black, you can buy a chip resetter (or an
outo-reset chip) and just keep resetting the color chip. (Let it run
dry and the head may be ruined , but you dont care.)

If you want to occassionally print color, you might try refilling your
color cart. with black (you'll still need the resetter). when you
want color, put in a color cart and run a few cleaning cycles.

I have not tried above ideas, BTW

For chip resetter or auto-reset chips: MIS (www.inksupply.com)---and
many other sources.

PS---technicality: The printer won't run if the CHIP SAYS the cart.
is empty. What is actually in the cart. is immaterial.

This is very poor 'advice' - if you do this you run the risk of burning out
the printhead and, with Epsons, that means replacing the printer (not that
the C82 is that expensive anyway).

I use the ssc service utility (free software) to reset the chips for my
c-80 I run one or two of the colors out as all I want is a hard copy of
an invoice or recipe.
Afterwards a cleaning will make the new carts work great...
I use the $4.50 compatable carts. for it...
no problem here.

I thought so too.....;) Does it really burn out the print head--or
is ti just that nothing happens?

I actually think the cheap way out is just fill both carts with black
ink---or, as someone already said, get a low end laser
