I/O device error

recently installed the adaptec duoconnect firewire/usb
card in order to accomodate a new ipod. since then, on
startup and intermittently during use of the computer, the
hard drive starts churning, stalling everything else. in
trying to figure out what is going on, i isolated a
problem when i try to deletel certain files --
specifically something in the prefetch subdirectory of
windows called rundll32.exe-32A109FC.pf. It starts the
churning again, and eventually i get the message "The
request could not be performed because of an I/O device
error."

i've tried disabling the new duoconnect board but that
doesnt seem to have an effect.

i am beginning to think that this is some kind of hard
drive problem -- maybe a bad sector or something. i am
about to pursue that possibility but thought i would try
this forum as well.

thanks for any thoughts

jon
