I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-841S using Windows
XP. I often get an I/O device error when I try and play DVDs or CDs. I have
tried all of these suggestions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/891894

I've updated and uninstalled/reinstalled the Matshita driver, the problem
remains.

What else can I do?

I suggest you post a copy of the complete error message,

D:\ is not accessible.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

That information is not very helpful.

Have you installed any third party DVD / CD software. If yes what
version?

Have the DVD / CDs been recorded on the computer?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Have a look in the System and Application logs of Event Viewer and
post copies of any Error or Warning Report appearing after an attempt to
restart. Please note all Reports have a date and time to help you relate
to what has happened on screen previously.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You used the word "often" instead of "always", so I suspect you don't always
have this problem.

The KB article dwells on IDE connected. I see nowhere mention of an 80 wire
data cable as a suggestion. This helps reduce external RF interference on
that cable.

It seems that this might be the drive that is beginning to fail. What
you are describing is the exact "symptoms" of some device failing.

Dave,

I just read that suggestion somewhere else. I don't know anything about
changing cables in a computer. Where would be a good place to find out how to
change that cable if I buy one online?

I don't know if the Toshiba uses proprietary data cabling for your system.
However, a standard ide data cable is the larger of the two cables connected
to any ide device. Be it a hard drive or DVD/CD device. (The smaller cable
is for power introduction to the ide device).

Removal and installation are pulling off, and pushing on the new one. There
is no locking device. They can only go on one way. Upside down, impossible
to install properly. Usually, one center pin is not used and not present.
Using either end of the cable is okay, no one end is meant specifically for
connection. Both ends are identical. The only caution I have is not to
rock the cable connector excessively at an angle, this may bend pins.
