I need to be anonymous on the internet.

Can anyone advise me on how to do this.

And why do you think other users will know who you are by your IP
address? That resource is allocated to your ISP and as far as anyone
can trace to you by your IP address. No one here knows to which of
the customers a particular IP address gets assigned from out of their
ISP's allocated IP pool. Your IP would know but then they'll know all
traffic you have regardless of using a public proxy to change your IP
address to that of the proxy.

Most folks that want to hide haven't a clue why they really need to do
so. You gave absolutely no reason, excuse, or story as to why you
need to hide. For example, if your intent is to hide from spammers,
your IP address cannot be used by anyone to identify your e-mail
address as they are unrelated.

You may find that using a public proxy will get you blocked. Many
forums, NNTP servers, web sites, etc., will block all traffic that
originates from these public proxies. Why? Because they are used to
abuse sites, send spam, harass, spew malware, or engage in illegal
activities, like pedophilia. Unless someone subpeonas your ISP, your
IP won't identify you personally. So just why do you think you have
to hide?

Remember that when you go through a public proxy, that proxy's owner
can still trace your activity and sniff your traffic just as can your
ISP. You also introduce a point of failure by adding the proxy: if it
goes down, your Internet connectivity is just as dead.

It is true that most people that want to be anonymous are doing it so they
can bother someone else in various degrees. There are too many people that
will do bad things, such as the woman that created a MySpace page to harass
a young woman to the extent that the young woman commited suicide. There is
too much of that.

I have not used any resource to hide my IP address, but I can understand if
someone is being harrased they might feel a need to deal with the problem
anonymously.

If a person were to have a static IP address or (like me) a dynamic IP
address that is nearly static, and if they used it both anonymously and
non-anonymously then there is the possibility that the anonymous uses could
be related to the non-anonymous uses and then they would be compromised.

There are laws against harrasing people, and more laws are being created,
such as laws created as a direct result of the tragedy I described above.
Unless a person is technically knowledgeable, it is difficult to act
anonymously in a way that law enforcement cannot compromise.

Since we don't know the truth about this specific situation, and since this
topic is outside the scope of this newsgroup, I agree it is best to assume
this person has malicious intent. Regarless of their intent, they should go
elsewhere for help.

One place people can go if they need protection from harrasment is:

Where do you get your information regarding that, because it's false?

One instance with tragic results should not be used to condemn an
otherwise useful and beneficial system.

Sure.

If you want to hide your IP address from certain servers sometimes,
the servers will be able to match your true IP using to your bogus IP
using a cookie possibly but it won't know which is which.

Again, one bad instance among millions and the Nervous Nellies are up
in arms.

Well, not really. Use public WiFi and it gets pretty tough for the
Keystone Cops to track you. Or sign up for dial-up with an ISP as Joe
Blow and use public telephones or prepaid wireless. War driving is as
easy as it gets.

I disagree on the basis that IPs nos. are pretty basic things and
innocent until proven guilty.
Regarless of their intent, they should go
elsewhere for help.

This is as good a place as any. Another use I have for anonymous proxy
servers is that they allow a person to vote anonymously.

Etc.

I have a problem with a number of websites, Microsoft included. :-(

It seems some companies link their webpage language to a computer's IP
address.

I wonder whether hiding my IP address would stop me getting the unwanted
language that is linked to my IP address and instead get the website to
'default' to English which is my own language?

Not too PC savvy, so apologise if it seems a little confused. :-(
