I have a server hosted at a provider that is outside the corporate
network but I would like this server to become part of the domain.
Can anyone point me to a good description of how to do this?

TIA

I forgot to include that I need this server to be a DC, although I
assume that once it is part of the domain simply promoting it will be
sufficient to accomplish this part of it.

First you need a connection between the two networks. Is VPN an option?

I can do this. The main DC is behind a firewall but I do have the
ability to VPN into the network, in fact I do so now for file and data
transfer purposes.

The part that is giving me the most concern is what will happen when I
tell the server to talk to the DC of the domain it is trying to join.
This network is set up with a fictitious domain internally
(companyname.local) while the external servers names are all in the
companyname.com domain.

I am going to try adding entries to the LMHOSTS file to make it be
able to find the internal DC but I am not certain if this is going to
work and it was my hope to have a plan before I started trying to do
anything first.

VPN between the two *networks* and not via a VPN client, right? You'll want
that.

If you're going to join it to your domain, this will change anyway. They
aren't domain controllers now, right?

DNS rather than LMHOSTS! And you'll need to put it in another site in AD
Sites....
