I don't want someone to say "I have no idea if this will work but try it and
tell me what happens." Please, someone who used some method that worked
please tell me what to do. I am unable to reinstall XP from Vista, it won't
let me. I can't restart my PC and boot from the CD because it's a DVD. I
did a clean install, I have WINDOWS and Windows.old. Someone please help me
I have no sound and my settings are gone. I know someone must've fixed
theirs. I only have one PC so I can't remove my hard drive. I have over
280GB of free space so I can do any partition. I have a Dell PC. So to
anyone who has successfully done it please tell me exactly what you did I
don't want to mess up my PC.

Nick,

First and foremost, back everything up. The only way to get XP back is to
COMPLETELY wipe out your machine.

I am guessing that you have a fairly recent Dell, which would have come with
a restore partition. It should still be there, but inaccessible.

Go to:

http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm

and download and run DSRFix.

Now when you reboot, you can select F12 or Ctrl+F11 and you will be able to
restore your machine to factory fresh.

THIS WILL WIPE OUT EVERYTHING.

Sorry for the shouting, but it sounds like you upgraded your production
machine and that really was discouraged.

Just look carefully through the postings in this and in the
installation_setup newsgroup and you will find detailed answers.

Maybe you wish to repair your capslock;-)

You can't. There is no rollback and you cannot use the Vista desktop to
install XP. I don't know why you cannot boot from the XP cd (it is not a
dvd) but it may be that you have the cd drive in a lower boot order than
your hard drive in your computer's setup (BIOS). Check the boot order. I
use floppy, cd, hard drive. If you do not have an XP cd then use restore
cd's that came with your computer or you did not get restore cd's use the
'restore from hidden partition' function (probably F11, but check your
docs). I have heard of that getting disabled by Vista and if so contact
Dell for the procedure to enable it. Someone may post the fix here since I
have seen it before in this newsgroup. Of course you can search the
postings also. Here is one of the quotes:

"Hi if this is a dell computer it will disable your f11 restore because it
rewrite the master boot record please go to dell talk fourm for more info.
this has happend to me!!"

You can get XP back from the windows.old folder, it has been done, it is a very
complicated process that can have a variety of errors that aren't really
informative though, and they usually come at a point where going back isn't
going to be exactly easy. It is going to be much easier to just reinstall XP
from a restore partition or XP disk, and if you can save the windows.old folder,
you can restore all your data/settings (but not programs).

I did a clean install,

Did you reformat the drive or partition that Windows XP was on and install
Vista to that, or did you create a separate partiton for Vista and install
Vista there? If you reformatted the drive or the partition that XP was on,
then XP is gone and you will have to do a clean install to get it back.

You say that you can create partitions. Did you create a partition for
Vista? If you installed Vista in it's own partition, then what you have to
do is fix boot manager/boot.ini so that it boots to XP, and then reformat
the partition that Vista is on.

In any case start by creating a partion and copying all your data there.
Don't forget your Outlook Express/Windows Mail message store. Also back up
to DVDs, just in case.

You need to format your PC. If you'd bothered reading THE BIG ****ING
WARNING TELLING YOU THAT YOU CAN'T ROLL BACK, you'd know this.

Too stupid for a beta OS.

When you help someone like this they will just be back in a few more
days with more stupid question.

This group is being flooded with moronic questions:
How do I get a product key
Where do I get a driver for xyz hardware
Won't install on my lapotop
Won't install on my computer circa 1968
My crappy video card won't run aero glass (the sky is falling)
My crappy sound card doesn't work
Can't figure out how to activate
Will my 16 bit program from 1992 run on Vista
How long can I use Vista Beta
How do I dual boot
I NEED STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO GET XP BACK
cannot delete windows.old file

Ignore them, children should only listen to adult conversations, not
be incouraged to join in.

Indeed, the fact that they are asking these questions means one of two
things:
1) They cannot (or did not want to) read the warnings and instructions that
came with the download.
2) They are too computer illiterate and should not be trying a Beta OS in
the first place.

there seems to be some information here that might be useful
and I can't remember where but I am sure I saw something
somewhere in the l;ast couple of days of surfing about windows vista that
refferred to being able to go back to xp from vista - although not easy.
