I need permission?

I have Vista home premium with SP1. When I sE it up, I chose not to
pay attention to the suggestion that I create a USER account. I'm the
only person who touches this computer, so I prefer not to have to type
a password to start it all. My account is OWNER.
Looking in help files etc., it seems to me that I should therefor have
complete authority to do things that only an administrator is allowed
to do, but I sometimes get messages that "permission is needed."

I'm the owner, I'm the admisistrator, I'm the only one who touches it.
Who do I go to to meekly ask if I can do something?

Thanks

Hi, Myron,

If you are talking about User Account Control,
You can turn it off in the Control panel (classic view)
Double click User Accounts and you will see - Turn User Account Control on
or Off.
When the next window opens, remove the check in the box by clicking it.

To stop being notified of a security alert, go to the control panel again
and double click Security Center,
and click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
Select the line you want.

Good luck
Jerry

My first impulse was to give a sarcastic reply, since I was already in
that condition, i.e., my UAC was already off, and I had the way I was
alerted to let me know, which I want.
I guess I need to ask a different question. Instead of "how do I get
supreme power," it should be, "Now that I am nearly omnipitent, how do
I use my awesome power to do something that my minion (i.e., Vista)
tells me I can't do without permission?

hopeful thanks

It looks like you already have a possible answer from other posters. I'll
state the obvious that when the UAC is turned off and more workarounds are in
place to prevents prompts, you system is more vulnerable to attack.

Just like everything thinks they are a good driver, :) everyone thinks they
are "careful" and won't get malware. However, if the zero day exploits in
Flash and attacks via ads served by third parties in trusted websites and
poisoned DNS aren't enough to scare you, then you have a high opinion of your
third party protections.

I've never had a good explaination of what people do that causes these
prompts and why they are so intrusive. The only time I get them is to run
programs with deep drivers like CoreTemp or Probe2 or backup/image software.
I get a prompt that says Windows needs my permission and I give it. No harm,
no foul. The alternative is Disneyland for all programs and processes.

Just my $.02

Myron,
This is due to another peculiar part of Vista. You will have to assume
ownership of the file. If you know how to do that, fine. If not, ask.

check that owner is a member of the administrators group, if you have
already done this sorry.

You and the others have convinced me that I need to set up admin and
user accounts. (I almost understood the below suggested sites to
read, but they're both a bit beyond me. Maybe I should define my
geekness or lack of it. I'm regarded as intelligent in spite of my
math weakness and my aging memory store, i.e., my 75 year old brain.
But I never learned much more about the computer and its various
languages than I had to. I'm also a nice person who will thank you
for your help.)
So I gave my present account, which is Admin by default, a name and
password, and then I made a new account with a different name and
password (and picture, all of which are yucky.)
Then, when everything seemed to be all right, I went to CHANGE USER,
and there came up a different background, everything else different,
and it wants me to start all over again.
I had just about finished re-arranging the Desktop just the way I
wanted and had had to re-arrange it several times before, because
Vista seems to want to change it every time it sends me a new fix or
"advancement."
I scurried back to my Admin account, where I know where everything is.

So I modestly ask again for your help. How do I make a non-admind
account which is almost exactly like my original account?
(This is taking more time than I like to spend on my computer.)

The suggested sites below are intriguing. I wish I knew how to read
them.)

Thnks again.

In Vista, what looks like an admin account really isn't.
It is similar to a regular user account in XP.
Unless you have activated the hidden admin account, you are not really
running an admin account.
Vista lies about it to make mid-level users THINK they are running as admin.
Just use the original account that is setup the way you like.
