I have tried installing 64bit time and again and it keeps dying at the same
point. I get all the way through and reboot to Windows Installing. I get the
green screen with everything happy on the top screen and the two sections on
the bottom screen, left section done, right section 75% done then BSOD. I get
a message in the BSOD about my ATI Radeon X1600 Pro PCIexpress and that is
all. I seem to be the only one unable to install 64bit RC1 and I don't get
it. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks,

Jonk

If you go to www.microsoft.com and enter 0x00000116 (you
dropped one zero) in the search box, you will be presented
with 2 links. Both tell you "The VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check
has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to
reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed."
which probably means the video driver is not compatible with
the particular edition of Vista.

The Microsoft web site has a wealth of information freely
available to anyone who desires to search for information -
and the information is all F R E E ! !

It would really be helpful if you were more forthcoming on information. If
you are upgrading, you should remove the video card driver before attempting
the install. If you are doing a clean install, some here have gotten
installed by supplying newer drivers, and some reported replacing the video
card with an older model, then being able to reinstall after Vista
completes.

hey there. i have almost the same type of graphics card as you do, and i am
getting the same error as you. i am upgrading from XP Pro to 32 bit Vista
Ultimate with an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro AGP graphics card.

On that 0x00000116 error screen, it suggests to dissable the cache on your
BIOS chip before installing. I am currently in the process of following that
advice....who knows how that will turn out? in an hour from now i may be
dead.

i just noticed now, the ati radeon website has vista drivers for the card:
http://ati.amd.com/technology/windowsvista/index.html

perhaps, before doing the windows install you remove the ati catalysit
software, use the standard vga graphics driver windows assigns to your card,
then upgrade/clean install vista, and then install the new vista ati
catalysit drivers (they do have a 64 bit version too).

okay, well forget about what i said above. because i still get the error.

the old win xp pro driver for the ati radeon x1600 doesn't have the file
atikmdag.sys. the new one for vista does. me thinks the vista installation
program needs to be passed the ati radeon x1600 driver 'atikmdag.sys.'

Bottom Line John, ATI knows that they have a problem with ATI Radeon X1600,
either it be PCIexpress or APG. ATI and Microsoft are hard at work trying to
pin point the problem. The best I can say is don't hold your breath, and give
them time to fix the problem.
