Is the computer really 100% virus/malware-free? Be sure:

Since we don't know exactly what "a big virus" entails, we can't give
you focused help with that. Lots of "big viruses" damage system files.
If your machine is really clean, you may need to run the System File
Checker or even do a Repair Install.

For the System File Checker, do:
Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]
and have your XP cd handy

For the Repair Install, see:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

For the error message you are getting, apply Service Pack 2 (unless you
already have it obviously). Also, make sure necessary services are
running. Do Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

You can look up services here:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
http://www.blackviper.com/

If any of the above seems too difficult, take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). There is no shame in doing this; I don't hesitate to take
my car to the mechanic.
