Hi group,

Sorry if this is very basic but I use 98 SE at home and know most of the
tricks for that, but at work I have to switch on (and off at the end of the
day) half a dozen XP Pro. machines and I would like to be able to have them
do this with the minimum amount of baby-sitting.

At power-up they ask me to provide a password, which is not an option we
need, so the solution is simply to click the OK button, but I would love to
know how to configure the machines so that they avoid this stage altogether
and boot all the way to a desktop un-aided.

At shut-down, I get a dialog box asking me if I want to shutdown, restart,
or log on as a different user. Can I circumvent all of this? The best
thing for me would be a desktop icon which I can click which forces a
shutdown. I know in former OS versions, I could make a a batch file with
the line @EXIT in it and click on a shortcut to that batch file and that
would force a re-start (not quite the same but you get the idea). Anything
similar in XP?

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Click Start > Run in the dialog box type "control userpaswords2" and press
enter
Remove the check next to "Users must enter a user name and password..."

I believe I remember Kelly having a shutdown script on her website.
All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Here's a fast way to shutdown Windows XP.

right click on a bare spot on your desktop, select new and shortcut.
use "cmd" for location, enter a name such as "shutdown" when prompted and then select finish.
right click on this new shortcut icon and select properties, in the "target" field, type in
SHUTDOWN -S -T 01

at the bottom of the window, select "change icon" and you can select something else beyond the default icon that windows selected for you.

select apply and then ok to get out.
you should now have an icon you can double click on for a "one-stop" way to shut down your computer.

Hi, Curt.

No. WinXP, both Home and Pro Editions, can best be shut down by pressing
the Windows key, then U, then U again.
