Does anyone know of a utility that logs all incoming ping requests from
other computers specifically the ip adress of the machine that is
pinging me?

Ethereal plus WinPcap

Thank you.

I'm having this problem where I'm setting up a network at home and I
want to do Remote desktop with it as well as share certain drives. My
problem is when xp reboots it seems to change the ip address each time
and so the rdp connection I configue is no longer valid b/c the ip
changed. If I write a batchfile which pings my ip for a specified time
which I seem to be able to maintain for my own, then use this app to
log pings I can determine the ip address of each machine connecting to
me and I can configure an rdp connection.

In a sense, each of the machines I'm trying to access is then reporting
in to me in a sense.

Thank you.

Why not just assign a static IP address to your XP box, then the IP
address will not change when you reboot?

I tried that and it would seem that should make the most sense but it
seems not to be working. I think part of the problem is that I'm not
sure what to add for the subnet mask and gateway info but either way as
soon as I reboot I go to check the ip and it's different than what I
set it to. I set them to simple numbers like 10.0.0.1,2,3,4 etc just
so I can keep a good tab on them but they work as long as I manually
set them for that time and then they change on reboot. It doesn't make
sense an I guess my real question is why are they changing. Anyway
thanks for the help.

Have you disabled Windows Service DHCP client, and excluded a
block of addresses from DHCP on your router?

At this point I only have two of my machines networked some I'm not
using the router yet. I will switch to using a router once I have a
good protocol and infrastructure. I was doing this with two simple
machines. I figured out what part of the problem might have been.

1)I stopped using the network configuration wizard and did it manually
and then, 2)made sure both of my firewalls were properly configured to
let traffic on the nics come through. 3)I also had to re do one end of
my cables. Once I did that I can now get my network setup to work.
The last thing I'm trying to work on is getting the ICS running. It's
wierd. (BTW I disabled DHCP) I need my computer or at least one of the
computers in the house to have the ability to share a hot connection to
the internet, behind a firewall. This way inside the network I don't
need to worry about firewalling, only antivirus. I wanted to try an
old machine with XP with nothing but firewall software on it.

Anyway I can see the gateway connection on the network from the
computer trying to use the internet share but I can't seem to make IE
see and use the connection. I can access my drives across the network
and do installs etc across the network, but It just won't see the
internet. I wish I could share it like a drive and call it even.

I'm going to look around on the microsoft site and see what I can find.
I'll keep you posted.
