I need a tool to monitor a directory and keep versions of its content
whenever they are changed and by whatever application (perhaps
preferably in a different directory). I think unix/linux has such a
tool but I'm using windows xp.

Freeware or payware, don't care though preferably freeware and
preferably opensource.

thanks

Maybe Fingerprint can help:

(listed about 2/3 of the way down.)

I'm trying to figure out if the original post specifies that he wants
the version info on files? Or if he's using the word versions in an
other way.

If it were the case that he wants version info on the differences reports,
then it might be that Fingerprint does not qualify. I could be overlooking
something or maybe need to see about latest upgrade, but don't see file ver
info on my Fingerprint output.

.. . . .

Another program to bring up is ScanSys. It shows version info:

I have two notes to myself about this ScanSys. One is that while its
snapshots are in a csv-type list -- its output report did not seem to
be exportable. Although probably I need to run it again to be sure.

The second note I have is that it is indeed possible, contrary to what
the hlp says, to add custom directories beyond drive C. It's just that,
to enable that, it requires making an edit on the program's HKCU key.

Maybe most important here, about ScanSys: it's the XP compatibility
question.

<readme.txt>
| ScanSys v1.01.0116
| By: Mark Balthazor
|
| Overview: ScanSys is a utility that will scan your hard drive
| and detect changes to your system files. ScanSys also allows you
| to log all your files which will show you at a glance where all
| these .dll's and .vxd's came from.
|
| Requirements: ScanSys will run on Windows 95/98 and PROBABLY NT/2000,
| though I admit I haven't tested that.

ScanSys URL? I didn't dig hard, and I think that's what would be required.
The old homepage says "moved," and directs you to a link that's a 404.
The listings for it at NoNags and at SOS's site, those both only go to
the old/dead URL.

Rereading your post several times over, I'm now concluding that you
don't have specific need for versions info on particular files. This
time, I have a new question for you.

Do you mean a live monitor, which notifies you automatically when
change occurs in the specified directory?

Or are you interested in those program where you manually launch,
take snapshots at different periods, and have it then provide you
a differences report?

The best known open source variant is CVS:

A frontend for Windows is found here:

A good site starting to scan through different programs is here:

well, what i meant was, i want something to let me know what changed
**AND** enable me to restore a file to a previous version of itself,
regardless of what application or disaster made the change.

Basically something like GoBack, or the SFC utility?

Another alternative, which claims to be "CVS without the bad stuff"
is Subversion. From personal experience, I can recommend it over
CVS.

The automatic monitoring of folders will take some additional
software, but I'm sure a Google search in this newsgroup will give
some nice freeware solutions.
