I went into the web site and downloaded the security
information that Microsoft told the media that we needed.
They web site checked my computer and told me that I
needed several files to update my computer.
Well, that'll learn ya to trust Microsoft!
Now I can
assess by D: drive
so I can't reinstall the Windows 2000.
I don't understand this sentence at all. Do you mean that you can or cannot
access the D: drive? Or that you can or cannot access the CD CD drive????
Explorer will still reject the CD but it will not read it.
Do you mean that Explorer will eject the drive when it's put in? Then don't
use Explorer, use My Computer instead. (You should use Explorer as little as
possible. If your desktop is Explorer, turn it off, and use a plain desktop
instead. The plain desktop is faster, safer, and gives you more control.. Use
Explorer just to access the internet, and nothing else.)
Why do you want to reinstall Windows? If you can read CDs by using My
Computer, there's no need. Besides, someone else may have a fix for you (I
don't because I don't "update" my computer just because Microsoft says so, so
I don't have most of the problems other people do.)
Anyhow, if you really must, here's how to reinstall Windows from the CD:
A) using My Computer, open the CD drive, and double click on Autorun. If that
doesn't work, double click on Setup..
or:
B) reset your computer so that it will boot from the CD drive.
1) Shut down the machine, restart it, and _before_ Windows starts booting, go
into BIOS Setup -- usually, that means press F8 or DEL - see what the boot
screen says while it's checking the RAM.
2) Look for "boot sequence," and change it so that CD-ROM is the first boot
device. (Make A: the 2nd, and the C: (hard disk) the third.)
3) Save your BIOS setting changes.
4) Insert the CD.
5) Turn off and restart the computer
6) The computer should now boot from the CD, and you should be able to
reinstall Windows.
Warning: you will lose some data when you do this, and you may have to
reinstall some software afterwards.
7) After you have reinstalled, shut down the computer, restart, and go into
BIOS Setup again. This time change the boot sequence so A: (floppy disk
drive) is first, the Hard Drive is second, and the CD-ROM is third. Save the
settings, turn off and restart the computer. It should boot from the hard
drive.
BTW, it would be a good idea if you bought a book about Windows 2000. There
are a lot of things one needs to know to use a computer effectively, and even
more important to prevent and/or fix the problems.
