I like a single executable file (I don't mind the occasional dll or
ini) because:

Just tried to install SnIco Icon Editor v2 but got the message:

Windows Installer Installation Wrapper
This package requires a newer version of the Windows Installer.
Do you want to update the version of the Windows Installer on your
system?

So, I click on YES, and I get this message

Windows Installer Installation Wrapper
Setup was unable to find the instmsi file
'http://www.dev4pc.com/Redist/InstMSIA.exe'.

So now I'm stumped, and I download the earlier version of SnIco Icon
Editor v1.5 (This comes as a zip and includes snico.msi)

This time the error message says:

instmsi.exe
Cannot find the file 'instmsi.exe' (or one of its components). Make
sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries
are available.

Followed by:

Windows Installer
This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer
service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer
version of the Windows Installer service.

At this point I give up.

This is not a rant against SnIco Icon Editor, it's probably a very
fine piece of programming, but then, I'll never know.

What concerns me is becoming locked into proprietary systems.
Programming still has amazingly open architecture. Please, let's not
throw that away.

They tried it with .NET (18Mb download, for what?) but seem to have
given up promoting it.

How about upgrading your version of Windows installer. There is nothing
wrong with Snicoedit or the install package. It's just using an
upgraded version of Windows installer. Most free and pay ware
distributions do. It's free from Microsoft.com. You can Goggle search
for the exact link.

But why do we need proprietory installers?

But why do we need proprietory installers?

Because it's available on 90% of the computing platforms in the world?
You already have it. It's just out of date.
