I have had this exact issue myself. I found that the cause of this was the nvidia drivers for the 8500gt. the Machine will randomly reboot with the fan going at an insane speed every so often, as soon as I reinstall the drivers for the video card it stops doing it for a few weeks. I tested this theory and installed unbuntu(not using nvidia drivers) on the machine and the restarts stopped, 8 months not a single one. Hope this helps.

WHAT "exact issue"? I don't know what "forum" you are posting through, but
be aware that it leaches off the Microsoft Public news servers in order to
make it appear far busier than it is. No-one who uses the MS news server
(the vast majority) has a CLUE to whom you are talking and about what.
 
Who,What,When,Where. At least include the post you are answering to. What exact issue and what is it all about????

That should be your mission. Find out who they are, where they come from,
and why they are posting. I'll expect a report on my desk by next Monday

Because he found the cause might be nVidia drivers OR he (also) tested it on
Unbuntu?

The nvidia drivers were giving you trouble( in Vista ?)

So, as a test, you ran unbuntu not using the nvidia drivers.
