I just added ram to my computer how can I be sure it's being recognized?

in the boot up of most pc's there is a POST Power on Self Test it should
test the RAM and report back on the size, if no, then once windows has
booted, go to my computer and right click slect properties and it should give
you the statistics of your pc, including the Ram amount and CPU speed etc..

(e-mail address removed) pretended :
is there somewhere I can click to make sure the memory has doubled?

joe54345,

If you have the My Computer icon on your desktop, right click, select
Properties and read the results on the General tab. 8-o

now if I originally had 256 mb of ram and just added another 256 stick
shouldn't it say 512mb when I right click on my Computer? If it still
says 256mb does that mean my RAM is not being recognized? Should I
reboot or does that mean the memory is bad?

it won't say exactly 512 Mb, as ram is measured as 1024, but the amount
should be close, if the RAM was bad most likely the pc would not boot, go
into your bios
and see if your settings allow for automatically recognizing additional memory
XP is capable of seeing up to 4 Gig, if the Bios of the MB will support it.

joe54345,

REBOOT! But the next question is...you did install the memory with the
system turned off and unplugged, didn't you? 8-o

If the answer to the above is "yes" then you may have mismatched memory
which could cause it to be unrecognised.

It happens that sgopus formulated :

should be close,

sgopus,

Actually, it will say exactly 512 MB or any other amount installed in
increments of 128 MB.

Check in Control Panel | System. If that's correct, you're dealing with a
known bug, but only a cosmetic one that doesn't affect performance. The
report in My Computer is just wrong.. If it shows the correct amount in
Control Panel | System, it's all being recognized and used.

joe54345,

To check the actual memory available do the following;

Start>Run>Msinfo32>from the resulting screen be sure System Summary is
selected on the left and in the right pane look for the amount of ram.

I figured it out. I didn't put the memory in correctly. I didn't put it
in on a 45 degree angle so it never "snapped" in. Thanks all.

Ken,

Did you mean to say "Computer Management".

Nice job figuring it out. Misinstalling RAM is painfully easy to do.

Great, glad you got it solved.

No, I meant to say Control Panel | System, but that's the same as in My
Computer | Properties, so what I said was simply wrong. What I meant was
that msinfo32 sometimes diisplays the wrong amount. Sorry.
