hi.
This morning I installed a new pci card (usb 2.0) on my windows xp pc. It automatically restarted after the installation was complete. But when I attempted to turn on the pc, it just goes to the boot screen for a few seconds, and then restarts again. If i try with safe mode, it comes up with a load of things I dont understand, and dont have enough time to copy it.

Please help.

P.S. I have a windows xp pc, if you need any other info. on my pc just ask.

P.S.S. I really would not want to reinstall windows xp (i still have the disk), because I still have quite a few files on the pc that I actually NEED that I didnt get a chance to copy

P.S.S.S. if you are wandering how I am writing this message if my pc doesn't turn on, then the answer is that I am using my second pc.

You need to access your PC in safe mode and uninstall the offending PCI card, then you can get some more info on the card and find where the conflict is.

thanks for that but i tried that and it just comes up with a load of files, then restarts again.

Have you taken the card out and then tried to boot without it?

The first time you put the card in did the machine boot then try and install the drivers? or did this happen as soon as you put the card in?

Yes, I have tried to take out the card. And it still didn't work, and when i connected it, it said it was installed and ready for use straight after i plugged it in, but it didn't actually recieve the info for anything i plugged into it; so i installed it using the cd, and then it "crashed".

But, It is kinda working, I inserted the windows xp disk whilst it was booting, and told it to do a checkdisk, and when it finished, it sais it found a problem with the volume. But when it loaded, it did load windows! But theres still problems, when i try to turn off my pc, it goes into my logoff screen, and just stays on it for about 10 - 20 mins, and then it logs you back in and comes up with an error saying "win logon has encountered a problem" , in one of those send error report boxes. So i have to turn it off on the button, which i know isn't too good for it. I tried to put in the windows xp disk and say repair, but it sais i have a newer version of windows so i could lose programs, so i didn't do that.

So now my problem is completely different!
Please help!

I would boot to your windows xp disk, go into the recovery console and run a chkdsk /r from there to try and fix any errors. I would also look on the net to see if there are any updated drivers for the PCI card and install them.

I did do a chkdsk, thats how I got back windows. But the problem is that I cant go on the net, you see, the whole point of getting the usb 2.0 pci card was so i can use my wireless adapter; so i COULD have internet. Is there a way to maybe write the update on this cd and put it on my 'broken' pc?

Yeah, if you go to the manufaturers website of the PCI card, they normally have a support bit on the site where you can download drivers. Get the drivers from there download them and then burn them onto CD (if its a zip file then unzip it first). Then take them to your other machine, this might not work but its worth a try. Right click on my computer goto properties, click on hardware tab, click on device manager, find the usb2 pci card and dbl click on it. click on the driver tab then update driver. Follow the wizard and select the CD when looking for the new drivers.

ok, I havnt posted in this thread for a while, but the problem is still there! Il rerun through the problem:
I CAN now go on the internet, but I cant logoff. I searched this on the net and it said it could be something to do with a file called something like cuiui.dll in system 32 folder, (cant remember exact name, but if you really want me too il find out), so i checked it out, and found out I didnt actually have it! Which is kinda scary...
I also discovered I can logpff on user accounts, even though i cant on administrator accounts.
Tommorow morning Im going to reinstall windows xp... the final resaught... Il let you know after that.

In terms of the pci card, I did get it working (no idea how), just a bit of fiddling =).
