I hit a key and something's gone really wrong...!

I was trying to put in an "unbreakable" hyphen and meant
to hit Ctrl-Shift-Hyphen. But I hit Ctrl-Alt-Hyphen
instead. My cursor turned into a large, heavy hyphen, and
now I cannot use the Edit-Copy command. It's not on the
menu. The "Customize" feature on the Tools menu is also
gone. The footer on my document also disappeared, and
begins at the point where I hit the Ctrl-Alt-Hyphen, 30
pages into the document. Things are awry...! Can anyone
tell me what I did, and how to fix it?

You'll have to look for another explanation for the missing footer, as there
is no way that Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen could be responsible for that. That is the
shortcut for ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut. It's useful for removing
files from the Work menu or the MRU list or to remove any other menu item
without opening Customize, but it can, as you see be dangerous. If you ever
again press the combination accidentally, it may be helpful to know that you
can dismiss it with ESC. Mike has told you how to restore the missing Copy
command to your Edit menu, but note that the keyboard shortcut for Copy is
Ctrl+C, which is usually more efficient.

Since you've somehow also managed to remove Customize from your Tools menu,
you'll need an alternative method of opening the dialog. There are at least
three other ways:

1. View | Toolbars | Customize...

2. Right-click on any toolbar or the Menu Bar and choose Customize...

3. (My favorite) Double-click on an empty area of any toolbar.

4. In Word 2002, you can also press the down arrow at the end of a toolbar,
then choose Add or Remove Buttons, then Customize...
