I am receiving an error message as follows:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'POP.charter.net (1)', Server: 'POP.charter.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F

Does anyone know what the problem is?

This problem is most likely caused by your antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled.
Replace with a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Actually - when I purchased this computer I purchased the Norton antiviris
and spyware products and they installed them on the computer before I took it
home. This cost me a pretty penny and they told me that it was the best
product on the market for security. I have been using Windows Mail for
approximately eight months and there hasn't been this problem until now. Are
you sure that it is being caused by the antiviris program? It seems that I
would have had the problem from the start and not eight months later. I
really appreciate your help.

I understand your reluctance to get rid of your paid-for
antivirus program, but just uninstall it as a test. You can
always reinstall it.
We have seen many reports here from people who had no
problems for several months, then suddenly Windows Mail
ceased to function. Uninstalling Norton or McAfee antivirus
often brings Windows Mail functionality back.

They lied.
I have "fixed" many computers by getting rid of Norton or McAfee. "Getting
rid of" is not easy for either.
There are many better, some free.

See if you can't get your money back from the guy that sold you on Norton.
If you can't, just make an adequate fuss in their store. Especially, when a
lot of customers are standing around.
Take Gary's suggestion to heart. A router/firewall, the Windows software
firewall and either the free Avast or AVG Anti-virus http://free.grisoft.com

It looks like you have two pop.charter.net accounts? The (1) in the error
message indicates that another account of the same name exists at
tools>accounts?
I would suggest deleting any/both/all charter.net accounts and then closing
WM, even try a reboot, and then rebuild your account from scratch.

I just read that Norton may be causing the error message. I just uninstalled
Norton and am now receiving my emails. Thanks for the great advice.

I received the same message and uninstalled Norton and I am now receiving my
emails. Thanks for the great advice! Verizon Techs couldn't help me with this
problem.
Thanks

Try disabling email scanning and the Internet Worm protection in Norton
AV options.

Did your carrier/isp recently change server settings(port #'s and
encryption SSL)?
- If your carrier/isp requires SSL encryption, then its even more
paramount to disable the above two options(Norton is not compatible with
SSL encryption).

For the average home user all the basic tools for online computing
browsers, email, firewalls, antivirus, media tools etc., you name it,
cannot be improved spending money.
If it is not free it's not worth having.

I wouldn't be surprised if Verison were getting a bit of treasure
from Norton to include it's product in their internet deals.

PC manufacturers, and ISP's who promote such products
are not going to bite the hand that feeds them and
they profit by turning a blind eye.

From M$'s point of view who can blame
them about trying to keep out of the issue.
They'd get stick if they went on record with regard
to a competitors product being a POS
or took steps to prevent it running..

Thus the problem ends up on this forum.

Well - Gary - it appears that your advice worked. I noticed that Dee did the
same thing and now is also receiving her mail. Do you think if I try to
install Norton again that the same thing will happen? I didn't realize there
was "free" security out there. It seems odd to me that anything would supply
anything for free. Would you suggest the Agast that you suggested earlier or
would you suggest the AVG? I thank you for taking the time to respond.
You've been a big help. I wish I could get my money back from Norton because
it does me no good if I can't run other programs if I install it. Thanks
again.

I highly advise against reinstalling Norton. The problem would
come back sooner or later.

There are free versions of almost any program imaginable.
Many are from not so well-known companies who want their
name to become established in the software business.

From what we've seen on this newsgroup, Avast seems a
little more trouble-free than AVG. AVG needs special attention
during the install because you need to select custom install
and then deselect the option for a mail scanning module.

I got my money back from Symantec after buying my last
copy of Norton Antivirus in 2003. I don't know if they still
have that money back guarantee.
