I have TWO instances of messenger

For some reason unknown, I have TWO instances of messenger in the system
tray. One is signed in, the other signed out. If I signed into the
signed-out instance, the other one gets signed out, and a litthe window
pops up just over the icon to tell me i have been signed out because I
signed in at ánother location'

It is a minor nuisance but.... how do i get rid of the second instance?

You may have both MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger...two different birds.

On either one, click on Tools/Options/Preferences and uncheck Start when
Windows starts.
 
Thanks, Raoul... It seems to have worked.
I wasn't even aware about the fact that there are two two birds. They look like
twins. Do you know what the differences are? Can I remove one of them? Why they
have two, both from microsoft? To confuse me?

Greetings Leo,

There are several differences between the two. Most notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for
display pictures, custom emoticons, has a different interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger
supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM Server, etc. Which one you use is up
to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs and likes), however one
thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on Windows XP in order for
MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application
Sharing, etc.).

MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile,
etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around Windows technologies (Exchange Server,
Office Live Communications Server, Windows Netmeeting, etc.).
