The first problem is that all of the '.htm files on my computer have a
lost icon icon instead of the regular IE one. The second problem is
that just recently the icons in the main website drop-down list appear
as lost too. Please help ASAP!!!!

a.. Type this command in Start|Run dialog box:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll

b.. Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following
location:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile]
c.. Backup the key by exporting it as a REG file. (File...Export)

d.. After backing up the key, delete the htmlfile key from the registry.

e.. Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu. Choose Internet
Options and select the Programs tab.

f.. Click Reset Web Settings button and complete the process.

Hi John,

I have not had ie icons on my new PC since it was a christmas present.

I tried what you suggested, but did not work. Restarted machine and still no
joy.

Do you have any further suggestions.

Thanks

Andy

Ambiguous symptom description? "ie icons" can be lots of places.

Also, always post your OS and version when you need help.

Assuming that "a christmas present" would have XPsp2 pre-installed
one likely possibility for one interpretation of "have not had ie icons on my new PC"
is that it has display of such icons disabled.

First you should make sure that they are "installed"
via Add/Remove Programs. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

control appwiz.cpl

In it click on Add/Remove Windows Components (or press Alt-W)
Scroll to the Internet Explorer item (e.g. press I...)
and make sure it is checked. Hint: notice what the Description: says.

If IE icons still don't show where you expect them to
then depending where that is:

Enter the Display Properties Customize Desktop Items dialog
(e.g. press Win-D,Menu,r,Ctrl-Tab,Alt-D)
and verify that Desktop icons for Internet Explorer are checked

or

Enter the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Customize Start Menu dialog
(e.g. press Win,Menu,r,Alt-C)
and verify that Show on Start menu for Internet is checked
with Internet Explorer selected

I tried what you suggested, but did not work. Restarted machine and still no
joy.

Do you have any further suggestions.

Not until you post a more complete problem description.

Thanks

Andy
