I was trying to change a file type from a pls. file to an application or program file. I thought I completed the task correctly but when I restart my computer. Now any applications or whatever I click on "My Douments", "My Computer" opens an MYOB file and sends this message: The file you have choosen is not an MYOB file. Also, my start-up menu is not showing on my desktop. WHAT HAVE I DONE!! GESH!!

Try using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to when you did
this. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

Are you saying that I have done the impossible and can not be fixed

why did you try and do that...what were you thinking..

I'm saying that I don't know, step by step, what you did and I don't know
which files were changed to what. The first step is also the easiest,
System Restore. This applet will restore the system to a previous state
without harming your files and may restore the file association....That's
what I'm saying.

Hi unknown,

I think Suzy needs this page...
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm

.....but it looks like she also has this problem which isn't fixed by the
above...

Quote: "If the "exefile" (.exe) Registry key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT has been
modified to run ABCDEF.EXE rather than EXPLORER.EXE for executable files,
then EXE files will still run with ABCDEF.EXE." End Quote

Any ideas on how she might fix this?

I have never seen Michael so unhelpful Suzy. Go to
www.kellys-korner-xp.com and look for file association fix. I think Kelly
and www.dougknox.com have nifty little script programs you can run that will
fix most known file associations. Good luck.

What was unhelpful in Michael's suggestion? The error occured recently - a
perfect scenario for System Restore. There is a good chance that System
Restore can unwind the damage since the restore points include copies of
the registry.

The suggestion for file association fixes from Doug's site is a good one
for this problem too. Have had those pages of his site bookmarked since
Win95 days.

I prefer to start with the easiest and least invasive solution. I also
believe it is important for users to become acquainted with system level
tools that might solve their issues now and in the future. System Restore
is a good first line of defense. I don't recommend anyone rely on it to the
exclusion of backups and other means of recovery but when something such as
this goes wrong, it is a good quick and easy fix to attempt before moving on
to more invasive solutions.. If it fails, we can then move on.
