I have tried playing music from CD's, online videos, even music that is
already on my computer and still there is no sound. I went through the
troubleshooter and I got to a step where I'm suppost to look at the HCL list
to make sure my hardware is supported but I can't find that list. The harware
that I have is signed and says it's working properly. One day the sound
stoped coming from my computer and I can't seem to fix it. If you have any
suggestions please respond, I will be checking this blog frequently, thank
you.

P.S. If it helps I have windows XP

Unplug the powered speakers from the computer. Plug them into a radio,
iPod, MP3 player, or something with line-level outputs that you know
does work. Can you hear that alternate source from your speakers? If
you don't hear anything from the speakers, check if they have a mute
setting and/or volume control and change them.

Then plug in a set of known working headphones into the computer speaker
jack and check if you hear anything in the headphones when playing an
audio file from your hard disk.

This is not a blog. It is Usenet (despite Microsoft trying to pretend
they have forums by providing a webnews client with a forum-to-Usenet
gateway).

What is Usenet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsgroups
http://www.masonicinfo.com/newsgroups.htm
http://www.mcfedries.com/Ramblings/usenet-primer.asp
If you use a webnews client, like Microsoft's Communities or Google
Groups, those are gateways to Usenet.

First, you need to distingush if your problem is from hardware or
from
software. Start by booting up a Knoppix bootable CD/DVD and see
if you can play some music from the alternative OS (i.e. Knoppix).
If you can, your hardware (soundcard & speakers) are working fine.
This implies your problem comes from software (i.e. your XP OS).

Second, (almost) all software problems can be resolved by restoring
the OS from a backup. Well, too often people have had no backup.

Well, try yourself to see if it is hardware or software problem first.

Good luck.

Hello,

The HCL can be found here, however, many hardware do not get their hardware
certified as it involves additional costs
http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=x

1) Check that your volume at the Speakers and Volume Controller is not muted
2) Check that your speakers are working (plug into a different device and
verify)
3) Reinstall the sound card driver from the manufacturer's site
4) Restore back to a point where the problem was not there. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084, try the above first before going to
this, as this will undo any applications and configuration changes you have
installed from that point onwards

Be leery of advice from SPAMMERS. Their agenda is different than their
pretense of giving help. This poster does know how to put his spam in a
signature (after a sigdash line) but refuses to do so because he is
afraid of newsreaders that strip off signatures. He wants to ensure his
spam is shoved in your face. That is his real intent.
