I have lost my start menu and desktop just get the generic program manager

  • Thread starter Thread starter ...
  • Start date Start date
?

...

I got the hide windows virus.
I removed the virus.

Now when I logon to windows 2000 professinal. I get the program
manager . Itlooks similar to the old windows 3.1.
I have checkd to make sure I have the correct verion.
I created a new user in case this ID would work but no start menu and
no desktop.
when I press the start menu key on the keyboard nothing happens.
I can run all programs using the run command in the program manager
window.
I can get on the internet using the run command.
I have check technet and have not been able to find a common problem.

If I check the task manager I just see the program manager running
(progman.exe)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my default desktop back?

Thanks in advance.

Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
