I have a usb adapter for my old hard drive and can't get info from

Hi, I have a laptop and my old hard drive from my desktop. The old hard
drive has one of those cases that turn it into a USB hard drive. Anyway I
can access some things on it and other things, the real important ones, I can
not get to. I keep getting messages that access is denied, yada yada yada.
For what ever reason, It will not boot on the usb drive, when the usb drive
is first turned on the laptop has an "Auto On" display, looking for something
to run. What Can I do, I have tons of info from work on their and can no
longer use my old desktop because it just doesnt work anymore.
