Chris

I am having problems with my network, and would like to
run ipconfig/all and show you the results along giving
you the problem and symptoms. Before I run ipconfig/all
and give you the results, What should I avoid posting to
the newsgroups to prevent somone to attack my system?

When I post the ipconfig/all results, I don't want
anybody attacking my system...:) I also beleive some of
the results are useless so if anybody can let me know
that will be a big help.

There's a chance that posting your public IP address could open you to
hacking, although hackers generally use automated methods to scan
large blocks of IP addresses and don't need to see individual
addressees.

If you have a public IP address, you need a firewall to keep Internet
hackers out, regardless of whether you post your IP address in a news
group message. The easiest way to do that is to enable XP's Internet
Connection Firewall.

You probably have a public IP address if your computer connects
directly to a cable modem or DSL modem or if you use a dial-up
connection. In that case, you can replace the first two numbers in
your IP address, default gateway, and DNS server with xxx.yyy before
posting the ipconfig output.

If you have a private IP address, it's OK to post the ipconfig output
without any changes, and your computer is safe from hackers. You have
a private IP address if your computer connects to a broadband router.
All addresses in these ranges are private:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group
