I have a problem opening old files from floppies.

(Thanks in advance for any help.)

Wonder if anyone can give me some advice on what is causing this problem and
how to go about fixing it...

I am trying to open some JPG files stored on floppies 4-9 years ago. I am using
the same program to open them that was used to view them originally (Paint Shop
Pro Version 3.1.1 in Windows 98SE).

The problem is exclusively with JPG files. All the non-graphic files open fine
and GIF files open fine. Some JPG files open fine. Generally the ones that
don't open are on the same floppy.

I can browse them all and get thumbnails, but when I try to open them, I get
the following fatal error...

PSP30 caused a general protection fault

With each file, the messages are pretty much the same with slight changes...

Floppies don't last forever. Your data may be gone.

Try a bad sector scan of the affected floppies with scandisk.
Alternatively, you could try another graphics program. There's no
reason to limit yourself to PSP311

Try copying the files to the harddrive, then open them from there instead
of from the disk.

Try with some other software. It seems that your software has a problem
with some changes in the OS.

Does not look like data corruption to me, that should give
different error messages (unless the software is very badly
designed). Anyway, copy the files to HDD and try again to be
sure. If they cooy without error message, then this is definitely
a software problem. And you need to copy them anyways, floppies
usually start to go bad after some years.
