I am running on a powerbook and want to have remote access to a
windows XP HOME edition computer. The xp home computer is using a
linksys router, and I don't know how to get around it. I also am
wondering if this is possible
Thanks
Derek

XP Home? You cannot use Remote Desktop (since it does not have it.)
Only XP Pro has Remote Desktop.

You may be able to install UltraVNC and then use the web interface to
connect to your Windows XP Home machine. This means forwarding a few ports
through your router to the XP machine, but if you really want to do this,
likely it will be worth it.

I'm with Shenan Stanley.

VNC, in one or another iteration will do this, but not nearly as nicely as
RD. To use RD in your situation, you'd need XP Pro, and OS/X (and maybe
one of the later versions of OS/X) Microsoft has a native OS/X client for
Remote Desktop, but you'd need Pro on the XP machine to have the other end
of the connection.

In either case, you'd need to forward ports through the router. I've not
used the web interface with VNC, but there are Mac VNC client pieces, and
for those you'd need to forward port 5900, TCP through the router. Ok--I
just tested the web interface to UltraVNC on a lan, and
http://machinename:5800 worked--so you'd need to forward port 5800, TCP
through the router for the web interface.

i am having trouble getting mine to connect w/ another
comp, as u can see in one of my posts, but i am running xp
home and i have remote desktop connection

XP Home can *NOT* be a Remote Desktop host. Use VNC as noted by Bill and Shenan...

If I get time tonight, I'll look for your posts.

In XP Home, you have the Remote Desktop Connection, which is the client side
of Remote Desktop. You can connect to an XP Pro host, or a server running
terminal services.

If that is what you are trying to do, this may be possible. If you are
trying to connect TO your XP Home machine, as Al says, you need some
alternative, such as VNC.
