I have a huge excel report that I use for work. It is mostly to log
inspections for my company. I update it everyday and it has grown to about
24,973 kb which really doesn't seem like much to me. My computer specs at
work are: pent 4 1.6 ghz with 256mb of sdram. I thought it was a memory
problem but i have the same problem opening it with my home computer which
has a gig of ddr memory, pent 2 2.6 ghz which should have no problem opning
the file. When I open the file it seems to freeze for about five mins then it
opens. The file has 5 sheets in it each sheet has about 8 columns with the
filter on. Is there a reason why it is giving me problems? Please help I can
barely even work on it anymore. I asked the IT guy at work but he doesn't
seem to know why it is doing it either.

What version of Excel are you using? Are you using the same version at home
as you are at work? What Operating System are you using "Work" and "Home"
same?

Before making any other comments/suggestions this information is needed.
Not sure of your experience, but if you were to go to "My Computer" right
click goto Explore, Properties in the General tab it tells you what Operating
sytem you're using, usually at the top it specifies "System" what OS are you
using (both home and work)?

Usually again this is dependent on your Operating system it should supply a
service pack level. Is this the same for both your home and work systems?

It has been my experience that P2 machines (like you've got at home) don't
work too well with Windows XP (Windows XP is designed for at least a P3 or
higher), on the other hand, the P4 machine you've got at work doesn't work
too fast with machines with less than 512mb of RAM.

Without knowing what version(s) of OS and Office you're using, let me first
suggest that you cut out the older data and paste it into another workbook
making the overall size smaller; save it then go back into the main workbook
again. Does this seem to help?

Please supply the version(s) of office and your Operating Systems both at
home and at work, also if you've got multiple versions of office running on
either machine. That plays a role too. For instance; if you've got multiple
versions of office loaded on any given machine, if they're loaded in the
wrong order (example: Office 2002 (XP) vs. 2003 if Office 2002 (XP) isn't
installed first it can cause problems.

My work and home computers are both running winXp with SP2 with Office Xp
Professional. My home computer is actually a pent 4 sorry I must of mistyped
that. I figured my work computer had low memory and added a stick of 512mb
RAM over the weekend so it now has 768MB of RAM. But the problem is the same
it still hangs opening that particular file.

I did what you suggsted and cut the old data and put it into another
workbook then went back and reopened the file and still the same problem.
Does this mean the file is corrupted? I was thinking of retyping all the
information into a new fresh copy of excel to see what happens. But honetsly
that was my last resort beause to retype all that information will be very
time consuming. On the other hand if that is what the problem is then i guess
i have to. I just need to resolve this issue once and for all. Thanks in
advance for all you help
