I just bought a system w/ win xp pro. After 2 reinstalls and all the updates
from ms, the ****ing system still reboots itself whenever it feels like.
Hereis one example from the event viewer:

Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network
Card with network address 0007E94BB378. The IP address being used is
169.254.83.65.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Click the link and you get:

We're sorry
There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and
Event Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time. You can use the
links in the Support area to determine whether any additional information
might be available elsewhere.

I'm ready to go back to w98se, xp reallllly sucks the big bag, I am
ready to send ms a bill for all the work I've lost because the of the
constant reboots.

Any help would be appreciated

My best advice? Either do your homework first so you can learn how to
install it correctly, or go back to W98 and "piss off" this NG.
Definitely a bad case of PEBKAC.

John,

Learn how to install xp? I'm not a techie, I pay money to let others do
grunt work.

xp came installed on the system, the reboot issue was happening and after a
reinstall by an authorized ms partner and loading all 58 or so updates,
service packs and fixes xp still is totally unstable.

How about if I post the contents my event viewer, would this help? ms wants
$245 for phone support so **** them.

what is pebkac?

Hi;

Time for some straight talk and sorry for the "ones".

Send the F***en system BACK.
It should not be that way to start with.
Don't ever accept the defective work of others.

Your $$$$ are worth as much as mine's and other's.

You got "dry SCR**ED" as in "N*N-L*BR*C*TED
F*RN*C*TED" big time.

Go raging mad with the guilty party

It's the machine, not the OS that happens to be xp in this instance.

Sure xp has got its qwirks and "deviations" from the expected perfection but
nothing like what you endured.
It is without question and with all aspects considered the "best of breed"
from< Ms yet.

I really loved and enjoyed the simplicity and manoeuvrability of Win98se
and still do but "the times they are moving on". So do the specs, so do the
OS'es.

Bob, a few questions.
What type of Internet connection do you have?
Are you running an Anti-virus program, if so, which one?
Do you have the XP firewall or any other type of firewall enabled?

john

(Ignore the pebkac bit, I didn't realise your OS was set up by someone
else - pebkac = problem exists between keyboard and computer)

John,

My internet connection is dsl w/ a Smartstream modem. I am running Norton AV
w/ the Internet Security package and do Live updates twice a week.
I have disabled the xp firewall.

btw I got a new error in the Application section of event viewer, it is:

The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal
state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be
caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the
components they make use of, or other factors.

So when I went to start the COM+ System Application service, the system
returned the message:

Could not start the COM+ System Application service on locaol computer.
Error 2: The system could not not find the specified file... namely
dllhost.exe which I deleted because it had Welchia virus. I have a copy of
dllhost.exe but its the win98se vintage, if I copy this file to
\windows\system32\ will I kill my system?

Bob

John, I think I have resolved the issue. I copied dllhost.exe into
/windows/system32 and the COM+ application service started.

I will keep you posted.

Happy for now,
Bob

Seeing you've progressed that far, it should be version 5.1.2600.0
There should be a backup copy in Windows\system32\dllcache\

If you like to mail direct, I'll send it to you (5Kb)
