When trying to open a pst file made in Outlook 2000 using 2003 I get the
error "not a personal folder file". Besides the Inbox repair tool (scanpst)
are there other ways to correct this problem? Right now I can't open the
older archives.

I'm currently running Outlook 2003 and using that version to try and open the
pst. The pst was made using Outlook 2000.

The new pst-file format of Outlook 2003 is not compatible with any previous
version of Outlook. The Outlook 2003 pst-file format is in Unicode while the
97-2002 pst-file format is Non-Unicode. Unicode is a character set that can
display almost every written language in the world.

This should do the trick for you:

It's possible that a third-party tool may be better at it. Use Google to
search for "outlook pst recovery". WIthout that, your PST is pretty much
toast.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. I did check out the link, but the problem
I have is that the older pst can't be opened in Outlook 2003. So, even though
I could create a container to hold the older style of pst files, I can't open
the pst files I already have to see their individual folders and drag them to
a new container.
When I try scanpst.exe on the existing archive I get the message "The inbox
repair tool does not recognize the file ...pst. No information can be
recovered".
Any other ideas?? I'm thinking of finding an old copy of Outlook 2000, but
can't really see how that would help since we use Outlook 2003 now. I don't
want to open the pst file in Outlook 2000 then forwarding all those messages
back to the user and having them open them in Outlook 2003 and then creating
an archive. The mail sizes would be HUGE and it would take alot more time
than I have. Let me know if you have a better idea. Thanks.

Thanks Brian. I agree - at this point my pst is toast. I will search google.
Good idea. Appreciate the help.

I have this same problem - but I have been able to get access to
those old <2003 files by going to a machine with OL professional SP2
(11.8010.8107) and under the tools/options/mail setup/files options
add the old version of the PST file it creates a new folder in
outlook but that provides accress to that email. BUT I find that
this solution does not work with all versions of OL 2003 SP3 looses
that ability.

Since there is no Outlook 2003 SP3, what makes you say this?

The new version of the PST Repair Tool has already been released and is
equipped with excellent features like compatibility with windows7, count of
all items in individual folder, MS outlook is not required on system for
running application, no need to rescan the file in full version and most
exciting is 100% preview & Detail Summary Report of all recoverable items
which help you to evaluate the software and make better decision about how
helpful will it be for you?
