I would like to suggest a resource I learned about from
this site:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html.
Look for information aout styles. It takes some effort to
learn, but is well worth it.
This is what is behind my suggestion: While working on a
document, press Ctrl + Shift + *, or click the ¶ symbol in
the toolbar at the top of the screen. This will reveal
the paragraph and formatting symbols and other nonprinting
characters. Every time you press Enter you create a new
paragraph as far as Word is concerned. The formatting for
each paragraph is contained in the paragraph mark at the
end of the paragraph. If you delete the paragraph mark,
the paragraph takes on the formatting of the next
paragraph mark. If you press Enter to create a space
between paragraphs, those blank paragraphs are probably
formatted with the default font. If you change the
formatting of text in a paragraph, then delete the
paragraph mark at the end, the formatting contained in the
paragraph mark for the next paragraph (the "empty space"?)
becomes the new formatting for the paragraph.
Changing the default font will prevent this from happening
in many cases, but learning to control styles will be of
much greater long term benefit.
In the meantime, consider using Format > Paragraph to
create space after a paragraph. In general you should
avoid use of the Enter key to push lines of text down.

Sometimes I erase a line (highlight then press the
spacebar or backspace). The next
line down will sometimes pop up to fill the gap I just created. But the irritating
thing is that the font changes to the default font (very small). I want to set the
font for the page so that never happens. Is it
possible? Is there another way of
