I erase a line - the font changes???

Sometimes I erase a line (highlight then press the spacebar or backspace). The next
line down will sometimes pop up to fill the gap I just created. But the irritating
thing is that the font changes to the default font (very small). I want to set the
font for the page so that never happens. Is it possible? Is there another way of
stopping this?

I would like to suggest a resource I learned about from
this site: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html.
Look for information aout styles. It takes some effort to
learn, but is well worth it.
This is what is behind my suggestion: While working on a
document, press Ctrl + Shift + *, or click the ¶ symbol in
the toolbar at the top of the screen. This will reveal
the paragraph and formatting symbols and other nonprinting
characters. Every time you press Enter you create a new
paragraph as far as Word is concerned. The formatting for
each paragraph is contained in the paragraph mark at the
end of the paragraph. If you delete the paragraph mark,
the paragraph takes on the formatting of the next
paragraph mark. If you press Enter to create a space
between paragraphs, those blank paragraphs are probably
formatted with the default font. If you change the
formatting of text in a paragraph, then delete the
paragraph mark at the end, the formatting contained in the
paragraph mark for the next paragraph (the "empty space"?)
becomes the new formatting for the paragraph.
Changing the default font will prevent this from happening
in many cases, but learning to control styles will be of
much greater long term benefit.
In the meantime, consider using Format > Paragraph to
create space after a paragraph. In general you should
avoid use of the Enter key to push lines of text down.

I agree with what Bruce said about the need to have the paragraph marks
displayed when working on a document.

However, one reason people may not want to have the paragraph marks
displayed is that, if it is displayed along with all the non-printing
characters including the space marks, it makes the document very messy
and cluttered, with a dot appearing in each interword space.

The way to handle this is to have just the paragraph marks (and perhaps
tab marks) displaying. In fact, Word has an undocumented comment called
ShowPara which allows you to toggle between having only the paragraph
mark displayed, and having whatever non-printing marks you want to
display. You can access this command through Tools, Customize,
Keyboard. Choose All Commands in the left pane, scroll down to ShowPara
in the right pane, and assign a keystroke. (For example, I have Alt+P
assigned to this command.)

You can then tweak the Tools, Options, View tab to get just the
non-printing characters you want.

I urged one of the MVPs a while back to include information about the
ShowPara command in the MVPs site, but he rejected my suggestion. His
idea was, users must have ALL the non-printing characters displayed, or
none. But, as I said, if the choice is all or none, many users will
choose to have none. And so they will continue to mess up their
documents by inadvertently deleting paragraph marks.

However, you don't need to use the ShowPara command to avoid having the
space characters appear. You can arrange the Tools, Options, View tab
so that the ShowAll command will toggle between "All" characters and any
set of characters that you like.

What I do is use both the ShowPara command and the ShowAll command,
depending on what I want to display.

I didn't make myself clear. I meant to view the
formatting marks to figure out what is going on, then to
turn them off again. Tools > Options can be used to see
just paragraph marks, but it is not as simple as what you
describe to toglle them on and off.

Sure it is. That's what ShowPara is for, as I explained.

What MVP was that? I wrote that article, and I don't recall any such
discussion.
