I.E. 6 SP2 Browser Background - can it be changed?

I have seen at various locations I have visited (in person, not online) where
the browser's frame/background has been changed from the standard
gray/tan/blue/whatever to some image or other. Can I customize my browser in
that way?

I have found in the I.E. 5.0 group a reference to
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar\"BackBitmapIE5"" in the registry, but I don't see one on my
XP machine. Any suggestions?

Flint & Steel,
Here is what you need to do... Follow the instructions carefully..
Be SURE and make a backup of the registry before you proceed.

Toolbar bitmap
With IE5+ installed you can define a bitmap to be displayed behind your
toolbars, in explorer and internet explorer:
a.. Open regedit and find the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar;
b.. Select, and on the right, rightclick and add a new string value, name
it "BackBitmap";
c.. Rightclick on it, choose modify;
d.. Specify the path to your bitmap (.bmp) and close.

If you've got IE5 installed, the BackBitmap still works then. But you may
insert another string value called "BackBitmapIE5". The normal one will work
for your general explorer windows; the new bitmap is specific for IE5 and 6
and
Outlook and Outlook Express!

Running IE6, or using Windows XP, though it comes with IE6, the
BackBitmapIE5 value is still the same, but the string value for the explorer
toolbar is now called "BackBitmapShell" (same key). Still, BackBitmap works
too.
This works great on my XP PRO.

Hi,
You need Web Accessories for IE5 from Microsoft.

It's available from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/webaccess/default.asp and works
with IE5, 5.5 and 6.

Additional information relevant to IE6 in this message:

Burt -

Thanks a bunch! Works like a charm! (I have XP Pro, IE6, the works...).
But now you have me intrigued. Where do I put the string value for altering
Outlook? I have tried ...Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook, and I close out
of Outlook every time I change it but it doesn't do anything. I have used
both the "BackBitmap" and "BackBitmapIE5" string values without results.

Awesome stuff, and thanks again!

I am not sure why it isn't working in OUTLOOK for you.. Hmmmmm. Maybe
somebody else has a clue to it.

background behind toolbars and menu?

but after you do this, and start any new explore.exe type windows (regular 'folders'), they will have the same background as
does iexplore.exe (IE).

still it's visually fun to apply various small gifs. (bloodshot eyeball is a classic)

intersting that the key implies it acts on *only* IE.
