Argh! I am at my wits end. I've looked at several of the posts here from
folks that can't access about 3/4 of their bookmarks after either running the
SP2 update or pop-up blockers like ad-adware.

I've have done almost everything I can think of, including installing
Netscape 7.2 and Firefox 1.0 and they do the same thing. I'll click on a URL
that I have bookmarked and I get that windows error message "The Page cannot
be displayed".

Here is what i've done so far:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled I.E. 6.0
2. Run sfc /scannow
3. Run winsockfix
4. Run aboutbuster
5. Run the netsh winsock reset command.

Help! I can't believe it has to be this complicated. Thanks for any tips
you can offer.

Hi Jalpa_Mike :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Favorites not working

Tools - Internet Options - Programs - Reset Web Settings

or.........

Courtesy of Ramesh - MS MVP

This is most likely due to corrupt InternetShortcut or http file
association. "Reset Web Settings" fixes this symptom. Another option is to
run the command "regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll" from Start/Run dialog.

also.....

How to delete a corrupt Favorites folder and create new one

Before doing so, you should create a new folder on your desktop called
FavBackup, and copy all your favorites into that folder as a backup.

If the problem persists after doing this, then you know that there is
nothing wrong with the folder, and there may still be some form of scumware
on your system which may require further action. If not, then you can copy
the links from the backup folder on the desktop, just the ones you want and
only a few at a time, to be sure that none of them are corrupted or bad,
testing as you go to make sure all is working properly, until you have all
the ones you want restored to the new folder. You can then delete the
backup folder on the desktop.

If you can not delete the folder from the Windows Explorer, then you will
need to manually delete the Favorites folder from the Safe Mode:

How to delete files or folders in Safe Mode

A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP
This article discusses the several Safe Boot options that Windows supports.
These options load a minimal set of drivers. You can use these options to
start Windows so that you can modify the registry or load or remove drivers.

and...

Nothing happens when I click a link in IE

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined
there:

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

Solution found!

Just thought I would post my solution in case anyone had the same issue.

Turns out my problem had nothing to do with I.E 6.0, XP Service Park 2,
Spyware or virus.

If you can believe this, it turned out to be something wrong with my D-Link
DI-604 router! I have no idea why it would allow me to get at some websites,
while not allowing me to view others. However, when I by-passed the router
and ran my cable directly from the modem to the PC, all worked perfectly!

Just as a curiostiy, anyone have any idea's why a router would let you
access some sites, but not others?

Hope this helps.

Mike

I wish I could help, as I'm having the exact same issue apparently.

I bought this HP laptop with XP sp2 on it and added it to my home
network under a dlink4 router and bellsouth dsl modem using ppoe.
Configured it identical to 3 other Windows 2000 server boxes with the
same dns entries. The laptop was surfing great for 2 weeks, then
suddenly I get the "The page cannot be displayed" on every page i
attempt.

On this laptop I am able to see shares on the network drives of the w2k
boxes, I am able to ping ebay.com from the cmd prompt. But If i attempt
to call the router admin from IE 6.0 on the laptop at 192.168.1.1 I get
page cannot be displayed - granted I can ping that same address under
dos. Same is true about attempting to call local address pages on my
network.

I've cycled power on all network devices. I'd deinstalled the IE
component and reinstalled it. I've reset IE setting. I've removed the
XP firewall.

This is bizzar and am now wondering if some hw has gone bad or
Bellsouth has changed something that XP don't like???
WTH?

Thanks for any help or information.
