I don't want Outlook to open my email until I click on it

Is there a way that when I receive email in outlook it doesn't have to
already be open in the reading pane? I have looked everywhere to solve this
and can't.

And although the little envelope icon next to the email does not show that
it's been open, it is right there to be read in the reading pane. If anyone
knows what I am talking about and can help I would so truely appreciate it!
Thanks.

Well, honestly, the simplest answer is to shut off the Reading Pane. Don't
use it.

Right. If you look at the settings in Tools - Options - Other, there are
ways to tell Outlook when to mark the message as read once it is open in the
Reading Pane.

The preview provides a security option. Outlook Express can be "set" (max 60
sec) to provide a "preview" of E-mail contents before the "envelope"
indicates an open condition.

Although the mail can be read in the preview pane - while the envelope is in
a closed condition the mail is being read from the server and has not been
"put" on the HD, giving you an opportunity to retain the mail or to delete
it if sender is unknown or mail is suspicious.

AJR.
If you see any portion of the message, it is already on your hard drive.
Consider 30 messages showing, YEP! they are on the hard drive. This is
Office Outlook that is under discussion, not Outlook Express.

The answer is in the help section. There's a /nopreview option you can
pass on to Outlook that will prevent the preview pane from being shown.
This is the same as going to View > Reading Pane > Off (in Outlook
2007). If you do use this flag, you may find it helpful to add buttons
to turn the reading pane on/off right on your toolbar so you can toggle
it quickly. If not, you will have to double-click a message to read it.

To set this option, right-click on the Outlook shortcut icon, invoke
it's properties, and in the "Target" field, add /nopreview somewhere
after the path to Outlook.exe. /nopreview should be outside the quotes
to the path.
