I know this is a 'community' with no support from MS, but why do they not
have a presence here? Surely they should be doing their best to solve the
many problems people are having with Vista prior to release.
Over the last few weeks, I have posted on several occasions about the
'expanding files' crash during install that many others have experienced, and
apart from someone suggesting that I remove a RAM module, and someone else
suggesting that I 'bug it out' I have had no help at all. Now, it's not just
me ovbiously, it seems that everyone posting problems seems to get very
little help from MS. Why is this?
I've tried clean installs, upgrades from Vista versions and XP, got rid of
my RAID setup, different builds of RC1, different burns (all at x1), but
still the exact same thing happens, i.e. Vista crashes at some point during
the 'expanding files' stage.
Very frustrating!

This is a newsgroup run by volunteers, much like yourself. If anyone from
Microsoft is here, it is on their own time (likely) and is not company
sponsored.

I understand that, and stated as such in my post. My question was (is) why
is there no support from MS here? Does it exist somewhere else?

I have to agree with that! This is a Release Candidate that a ton of people
can't even install, yet there is zero input or comments from the folks at MS
who should be working on making sure the product works. This Release
Candidate seems more like an Alpha than even a Beta! My computer just sits at
a black screen after the install... nada... no error messages or anything.
There doesn't even to seem to be a n error log to track why it won't install.
I think that the Volunteers here are trying to do their best, but ultimately
MS needs to step up and address the main issues here. They need to realize
that if we can't even install the RC why would we consider shelling out our
hard-earned cash on a crap shoot?

I don't work for MS and I sympathize with you situation. There does appear
to be some MS personnel hanging around helping some folks. Who they are
exactly, I don't know, but they do have some answers. Mostly answers here
come from folks like yourself and maybe some a little more experienced in
troubleshooting systems.

When MS released the Beta to the public, they weren't doing it for the
benefit of the public, but trying to get feedback on as many possible
configurations and experience levels as possible. Obviously the real Beta
Testers could not find all the deficiencies in the software since so many
folks have problems, but I am sure they worked out at least a standard
install on some general configurations.

I have not seen any of your posts, and don't know your configuration, but
why would the "expanding files" part of the install break? Maybe there is
not place to put the expanded files. What does a clean install of Vista
take--10 gigs? Do you have that much space available.

Is there something about your hard drive configuration causing problems and
Vista can't successfully complete the operation? You said you got rid of
your RAID setup, did you turn it off in the bios also? Did you try loading
SATA drivers if they might be needed.

Is you burned DVD good and no corrupted files which might cause a problem?

Are you over clocking your system?

What state was you hard drive in when you started the install, formatted or
not, and by what?

I don't know about the memory, or your exact configuration, so all I might
suggest would be to remove everything from your system you don't need to
install, like extra CD drives, or external devices, modems, and try the
install again. If you are using a SATA drive, you might try using a PATA
drive to see if it will install with that. Try it with just a basic system,
just as you would do any other time you could not get your computer to run.

If you could track down your problem, it would probably help many other
folks when the final version releases.

Thanks for your reply. See below for answers.

I have 200Gb free. A lot of people have the 'expanding files' problem.
There have been many posts here on that subject.

It is turned off in BIOS. I tried all combinations of what I said in the
original post. I am now back to running XP on normally formatted drives - no
RAID in sight. This is a shame, because I am missing the performance of the
RAID setup. But I have tried upgrades, clean installs, install from booting
the DVD - both on RAID and not on RAID.
Is you burned DVD good and no corrupted files which might cause a problem?
Again, as I said in the original post, I have made several attempts on the
DVD. I have tried build 5600 and 5728 both on 2 or 3 different DVDs all
burned at x1. There is nothing wrong with any of them as I can copy the files
across to an HDD without a problem.
Are you over clocking your system?
No.

I've tried formatted in RAID, unformatted in RAID and formatted without RAID
and unformatted without RAID, letting the installation do the formatting.

I've been trying for weeks now to track down the problem and I've given up !
I have tried around 10-12 different configurations of my system, and each
time the installation fails during the 'expanding files' stage, usuall
between 21-29%.

Hello

I also had multiple failures with install using the DVD I burned, ended up
formating an PATA drive (could not get Via drivers to work for my SATA)
installed XP Pro SP2 on the drive updated it via windows update (did not
install any programs) then copied the Vista Install DVD to a folder on the XP
disk and installed it from XP using the folder copy of the install disk.

went in like a charm,

I was very frustrated as the DVD was checksumed ok and just stopped
installing for some reason.

very cumbersome way to install, BUT the key is it installed and is working
well

my "bi*ch" is that UAC is unweldy and makes my MS Outlook 2007 Beta not able
to use hyperlinks or update from the help menu. I am using administrator
privileges and still cannot get away from the

" The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Pleas contact your system administrator"

WHAT RESTRICTIONS, WOW

Good luck on your installs
