I don't know how to go about it

This is my dilema
I have over 150 CDs of my own images, they are filed in a mixed order, some by types of images, because they were negs or film thate were scanned. Later after I got my D60 being filed by dates. However, I just got a new PC with Wind XP and would like to do something with my library. I would to organize them in a different way, so the source would be my CDs and would be extracting image by image, order to have a DB almost like a photobank or whatever you want to call it

So should I leave my original set of CDs as they are, then copy them into my HD organize them accordingly, then burn a new CD as they are being re-organized. Ideally, I would like to find a program that would keep my thumbs on my HD and could be viewed any time, then if I need the orig image, I would know which CD to load up. I have tried several programs but are either too basic or they are extremely difficult user interface like Imatch for instance

I as trying to select the images from my CDs without copy the entire CD into the HD, but every program that I have tried they usually creats thumbs for the entire folder. Sorry for being so wordy thanks

I suspect that Adobe Photoshop Album is what you're looking for. Take a
look at

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/main.html

and have a look at the overview and in depth sections. You can download a
starter edition to see if it's what you want.l

Have you tried Microsoft Digital Image Suite 9?

It includes...Digital Image Pro 9 (an excellent, user
friendly digital image editing program) and Digital
Image Library 9.

You can use the Import Pictures Wizard in the Library
to catalog the images on your CDs. You can view the
thumbs and add keywords for searching and if you wish
to open the full sized image the program directs you to
the correct CD.

Here's a link to some more info:

Yes, I did and returned it. It's ok for those people that have mostly family pix, etc. It has a lots of utilities to edit your images, which I don't need since I usually use Photoshop. Also, it doesn't keept the thumbs in your HD and the CDs offline. And for what it does, it uses lots and lots of resources

As far as Album from Adobe I have heard about it, but haven't tried it yet. My new computer came with JACS it does similar to what Album does. However, I don't think that even Album from Adobe can work with RAW images

You may want to take a different approach.
How about purchasing a USB 2 or Fire Wire external hard drive and copying
all your CDs to it. Safer than CDs and a lot easier than trying to find out
the CD containing a particular group of pictures. Being on this hard drive,
you can now search them more easily with the variety of software you are
already familiar with.
With the number of CDs you have, it seems like a nightmare, but even if they
are all full you still have no more than 100GB. You can find a very good and
fast external 250GB hard drive for about $300.00. You can check LaCie via
google.

You know that sounds like a good idea, and if I do that I wouldn't have to look for a specific program to create thumbnails and save them on my HD, and yet being able to save the original offline. Hmm, you got me thinking now. Except that I have to wait a while since I just installed a second HD of 160 GB and my first one (for windows and apps has 80G)

If I go the way you suggested, would WindXP would be able to handle 80 + 160GB and then on top of that add another ext for 200GB?

The one I have is 200GB by LaCie.
Described here:
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10017
Since it connect via a USB2 port there is no problem at all for any computer
with this port to connect and use. If you have USB1 port, it would be a lot
slower transfer (and I would check with LaCie before buying to see if it
will work).
They also have Fire Wire type connection if you prefer, but check the Fire
Wire compatibility with your card.
These drives are built like bricks. Very solid, yet quite portable.

I just checked my drive on a USB1 port on another computer. No problem. You
just connect it, open My Computer and it is listed there, just as when using
USB2. Copied a folder of photos. Works fine, just slower transfer than on
USB2.

Thanks Ives for checking. As I said, I have to wait a while until I get more $$$ so I could buy another ext drive. Although for a while I am going to be set since I have a total of 240 GB using 2 HD>
