No, I don't want to use fat tools like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro to do the task
mentioned in the subject line. I need a small (shareware/freeware) tool which does the same
job preferable from the command line.
Can someone recommand such a tool ?

Paul

Don't know what you're doing, but raster images are generally sent around in
a lossy format. That means something like .jpg's lose evertime they are
dealt with , zipped , unzipped, screwed with generally they loose code, and
like cameras images can best be served up interned in another format besides
the populars ones as jpeg or gifs. The general point being able to do with
them what the end product should be of concern. Saying that, there small
programs unlike those costly ones that actually are free. I am rarther a
tight ass, myself and would recommend Irfanview. I'm glad you didn't ask for
directions. It is an easy Google search.

PKzip; RAR; tar....
All archiving tools usually use some kind of compression.

..jpg's are already in a compressed format
although if you zip them there might be a small reduction

??? Zipping and unzipping does not damage jpeg files.

JPEG files are already compressed. Zipping them sometimes makes the file
larger. Only way to change file size is to reduce size of image, and for
that you need a "fat tool". Irfanview has a good tool you can download for
free.
