Steve

I am trying to use a specific web site. I get an error
that says "can't find server or DNS error". I go to my
desktop and have no problems using the site. So I know it
has something to do with my laptop. I eliminate the
wireless connection and plug the cable directly into my
laptop, no good, still can't use the site.
I call my service provider and they went out of their way
to examine why. They had me go to the C prompt. they had
me ping the site I was trying to use and the result was
that some how I was trying to ping my own address when the
links I was using to access the site I wanted to use. They
had me go into my Internet options and delete the IP/tcp
or something like that then put it back or something. They
had me config something on the C prompt and then release
and then restore. They finally had me put in the number
that should get me to the site I wanted to use and it
worked. Now two days later I get an email from the site I
want to use, I click it and get the same error I did
before I thought I'd fixed it. Why is this happening and
how do I fix it.
I use windows 2K pro and IE 6.0.2800

See your HOSTS file (no extension)
For XP machines it should be in the Windows\System32 folder or if not in the
Windows folder or the Windows\System folder.

See http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/

Use Windows Explorer to find the file HOSTS and open it with Notepad
(because it has no extension you will have to choose a program to open it
with)

It will look something like this:

# ********************************************************
# This HOSTS file is a free download from:
#
# Notes: the browser does not read this "#" symbol
# You can create your own notes, after the # symbol
# This *must* be the first line: 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ********************************************************
# -------------------updated: 08-30-03-------------------*
# ********************************************************
# Entries marked: [Restricted Zone site] = domains.reg
# http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm

127.0.0.1 localhost

# Misc Add-ons [A - Z]
#
127.0.0.1 aakro.nl
127.0.0.1 abcsearch.com
127.0.0.1 abetterinternet.com #Transponder
127.0.0.1 download.abetterinternet.com
127.0.0.1 www.abetterinternet.com

So search and find the URL address of the site being blocked and place the #
character at the beginning of the line to comment it out. Save the file and
then re-start IE.

Thank you for your help, I think I'm a little over my
head. I'll try again tomorrow, I've been trying to long
and I'm lost for now. I will try again fresh.
Thanks very much.

Steve,
Symtom: Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or DNS Error

In the event you can not access a site and you believe it
may be due to an entry in the HOSTS file.

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS file "on-the-fly".
Download: RenHosts.bat

Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK
